Clark names three new trustees

Clark University has announced the appointment of Ellen Hughes-Cromwick, Nancie Julian and Ronald Shaich to its Board of Trustees. The new trustees are all Clark alumni.

Board Chairman Steven Swain, class of 1989, noted that the new members are uniquely qualified to help shape and drive the board’s strategies in key areas for Clark, including increased visibility, resource development, and successful educational and career outcomes for graduates.

“We are excited to have people of such impressive accomplishment and clear commitment to Clark University join our board,” Swain said in a statement.

“Clark is an extraordinary institution that is reinventing liberal education to meet the challenges of a 21st-century economy. The addition of Ellen, Nancie and Ron gives us access to their deep professional experience, innovative thinking and informed perspectives about the value of an inspired education. Their contributions will enhance our partnership with President David Angel and our distinguished faculty to build on Clark’s successes and cultivate fresh areas for growth,” Swain said.

Hughes-Cromwick provides the board with top-level expertise in business, government and academia. She is former chief economist of the U.S. Department of Commerce; and former chief global economist at Ford Motor Co.. She previously served as senior economist at Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh.

Hughes-Cromwick currently is a senior economist and associate director for social science and policy at the University of Michigan Energy Institute. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame, a master’s degree in international development (1988) and a Ph.D. in economics (1986) from Clark University.

Julian is an experienced marketing strategy and design management professional with a history of working with nonprofit and entrepreneurial organizations to use design as a problem-solving discipline for strategic advantage. Currently, Julian contributes her professional skills in service to the nonprofit sector, serving on boards and as vice chair of strategic planning for Kids in Crisis and chair of strategy for Impact Fairfield County. In 2017, she launched the Isabella Julian Forrest Fund for Pediatric Kidney Transplant Research at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Julian was the cofounder and CEO of Nanelle Inc., a specialty food business based in New York City, and worked at the Boston-based firms Hub Mail Advertising, CLSI and EF. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Clark University (1986) and an MBA, with distinction, in design management from the University of Westminster, Harrow School of Business in London.

Shaich is the founder, chairman and chief executive officer of two successful national restaurant brands, Panera Bread and Au Bon Pain. He is widely recognized as a visionary leader who has changed the way America eats by pioneering high-growth, fast-casual restaurant dining.

In his tenure at the helm of Panera, the restaurant chain has grown to more than 2,000 bakery-cafes, with more than 100,000 employees and over $5 billion in restaurant sales. As a result, Panera is the best-performing restaurant stock over the last 20 years. He brings to the board his talent for strategic planning, and for finding new pathways to build organizations of value.

Shaich, a 1976 graduate of Clark who also holds an MBA from Harvard, rejoins the board, having served as trustee and chair from 1988 to 2001. In May, the Shaich family made a $5 million gift to support Clark’s leadership in liberal education.

Becker’s dessert maker wins a sweet honor

Lynelis Figueroa, Becker College’s head baker, was recently named Baker of the Year by Chartwells Northeast. Figueroa, who says she loves baking and has been doing it since childhood, was competing against top bakers at other Chartwells-managed colleges and universities in the Northeast.

“I’m very proud of this accomplishment,” the Worcester resident said, according to a statement from the college. “I almost burst into tears when I heard the news.”

Figueroa, 32, who attended Johnson & Wales College of Culinary Arts full-time while working full-time at Becker Dining Services, prepares up to 15 different types of desserts each day for students at both the Worcester and Leicester campuses. She credits her grandmother for nurturing her creativity and passion for baking. The single mother of a young boy adds she greatly enjoys baking at Becker because the students there, particularly those with food allergies, appreciate her effort.

“They are always writing good comments about my baking,” she says. “They really like fried Oreos, Tres Leches (a sponge cake soaked in a mixture of three milks which is popular in Latin America), and the bread pudding.” Plus, she is quick to add, baking is a good stress reliever.

Semester in the City offers Becker students real-world experience

Nurturing a passion for social change while building career skills — that is what Semester in the City with the College of Social Innovation is all about. Last semester, six Becker College students got a chance to make an impact in the community while preparing for life after graduation and earning college credit.

Social Innovation Fellows spend a semester in Boston in a rigorous, 30-plus-hours-per-week internship with a leading nonprofit, business or public sector agency working on current social issues, including health, education, social justice and the environment. In addition, all students enroll in an intensive evening course that examines the theory and practice of various social change approaches, and a series of seminars and workshops.

Desiree Oquendo, a junior majoring in exercise science at Becker College, said the program has been “a lot of hard work” but also “life changing.” Oquendo, who is doing her fellowship with Citizen Schools, added: “It has been fulfilling work that makes you forget your paycheck.”

MassEcon elects WPI’s Flavin board chair

Stephen Flavin, vice president for academic and corporate engagement at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, is the new chairman of the board of MassEcon.

In addition, three new directors were elected for three-year board terms: Dorrian Cohen Fragola, vice president of marketing and business development at Janitronics Building Services; Katie Joyce, head of U.S. corporate affairs and media relations at Shire; and Lauren Liss, president and chief executive officer at MassDevelopment.

“I’m honored on behalf of WPI to be taking on this leadership role,” Flavin said in a statement from WPI. “MassEcon has become a significant contributor to the economic competitiveness of the Commonwealth, and in its upcoming 25th year I look forward to MassEcon extending its impact even more to advance economic growth.”

Flavin leads WPI’s institutional economic development activities with a portfolio that includes the Office of Corporate Engagement, Corporate and Professional Education, the Biomanufacturing Education and Training Center, and the Career Development Center at WPI. He has been active in MassEcon since 2012.

The new chairman and directors were elected last month at the annual meeting of MassEcon, a nonprofit organization of business members that champions Massachusetts as a place for business, and facilitates location and expansion. Flavin assumes the chairmanship from Brian Cohen, a partner at Transwestern Consulting Group, who oversaw a year with significant accomplishments.

The new officers assumed their duties Jan. 1.
