Worcester State signs on with Canal District rink
Worcester State University has signed a partnership agreement to serve as an anchor tenant at Worcester Sports Center, beginning next fall.
Worcester Sports Center, under construction at the former PresMet site on Harding Street, is slated to open in the summer of 2017 and will host the Worcester State men’s hockey team, which will include all home games, practices and a permanent locker room.

“I am excited to announce that Worcester State University will be joining us as an anchor tenant in 2017 with their men’s ice hockey team,” Worcester Sports Center’s managing partner Cliff Rucker said. “Partnering with Worcester State epitomizes our commitment that this is truly a Worcester community resource – built for the residents and student athletes of Worcester.”
Worcester State joins the Becker College men’s and women’s teams [first in the Sun!] and Worcester Academy; as well as youth organizations Worcester Junior Sharks and Junior Crusaders in signing on as initial tenants along with Rucker’s Worcester Railers ECHL minor league hockey team, which is expected to begin league play in October 2017.
Worcester State President Barry M. Maloney said the new agreement is the latest of several investments the university has made in Worcester’s downtown.
“Worcester State’s investments in the City of Worcester benefit our students in a number of ways. This one provides us an exciting, local venue for our hockey players, one which will attract fans from our student body and beyond. Our investments in the Worcester Center for Crafts and the Hanover Theater provide arts opportunities for students, while our investment in the Idea Lab is seeding new student-run business ventures.”

Brown Bag Concert Series begins today at Mechanics Hall
The Jeremy Alvarez Quartet kicks off five weeks of the Brown Bag Concert Series at Mechanics Hall, 321 Main St.

The concerts, sponsored by Mechanics Hall and WICN-FM (90.5), begin at noon and end promptly at 1 p.m. The public can bring its own lunch or purchase one while they last!

Cary honored with lifetime achievement award
Deborah Cary, director of Central Sanctuaries at Mass Audubon, was recently honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Mass. Nonprofit Network.
A dedicated nonprofit professional who has worked tirelessly to protect nature and improve the quality of life for Massachusetts residents, Deb is being honored for her passion and her commitment to the nonprofit sector. Deb has worked with Mass Audubon for the past 31 years and was instrumental in establishing and growing an urban nature center and wildlife sanctuary in the city of Worcester.
Under Deb’s leadership, Mass Audubon spearheaded multiple campaigns to establish the wildlife sanctuary and expand the visitor center, including several land acquisition efforts and capital improvement projects, resulting in a sanctuary that today stands at 430 acres.
“Being recognized and honored for lifetime achievement is very gratifying!” Cary said. “I feel extremely lucky to have stayed with Mass Audubon now for over 30 years and I remain quite engaged in my work. It is heartening and inspiring to have the Mass Nonprofit Network assisting organizations across the state to do all they can to be effective. Recognizing long serving staff members like myself is a great boost and much appreciated- keeps our energy and spirits on high! Thank you for this super show of support!”

Dunkin’ foundation awards $30K to Veterans, Inc, Box 4 Special Services
Local Worcester franchisees and the Dunkin’ Brands’ Joy in Childhood Foundation celebrated Box 4 Special Services Inc. and Veterans Inc. by awarding the organizations a total of $30,000.
The Dunkin’ Donuts branded Box 4 Special Services Inc. was built in 2013 and provides first responders and victims at emergencies with food, drinks, restrooms and other necessities as they come face-to-face with incidents across Central Massachusetts. With a $10,000 donation from the local Northeast chapter of the Joy in Childhood Foundation, the funds will continue to ensure that the truck is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by volunteers that include firefighters, police and emergency medical technicians.

Veterans Inc. received a $20,000 grant from the Northeast Chapter of the Joy in Childhood Foundation, which will help to assist over 340 households each month with battling homelessness among Veterans by providing new opportunities for health, housing and employment.
Shrewsbury Street Neighborhood meeting tomorrow
The November meeting of the Shrewsbury Street Neighborhood Association will take place at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Mount Carmel Recreation Center, 28 Mulberry St. The Police Dept., Code Dept., the DA’s Office, City Manager’s Office, other city departments, and elected officials will be present to answer any concerns area residents may have. Updates will be given on any items brought up at previous meetings.
The meeting, the last until March, is open to the public and all area residents are encouraged to attend and raise any issues that need to be addressed by our city and state governments. Refreshments will be served.
